Ràpids are fast-flowing sections of a river where the water accelerates over a relatively short distance, producing turbulence and visible whitewater. The diacritic form ràpids is occasionally used in non-English contexts to reflect pronunciation, but the English term rapids is widely understood.

Rapids form where a river experiences a steep gradient, obstacles in the channel, or constrictions that push water to move more rapidly. Common subtypes include cascades, where water drops over a series of small steps; cataracts, which are high, down-cutting falls; steps or rock gardens, where boulders create a sequence of rough water; and constrictions, where a narrow channel speeds up flow. Turbulence arises as water interacts with rocks, eddies, and sometimes air entrainment, creating swirling pockets and foaming surfaces.

For navigation, rapids are often classified by difficulty. The International Scale of River Difficulty ranges from Class I (easy moving water) to Class VI (extremely dangerous and seldom attempted). Classification accounts for water volume, gradient, obstruction density, rock quality, and hazards such as rocks, hydraulic jumps, and entrapment risks. Safety considerations include wearing protective gear, scouting ahead, and having experienced guides for difficult sections.

Ràpids play a significant role in recreation, hydrology, and ecology. They shape river morphology, influence sediment transport and oxygenation, and support whitewater sports such as kayaking and rafting. In hydroelectric regions, rapids may be altered by dam releases, which can change flow patterns and habitat. Despite their danger, rapids offer ecological niches and attract river users seeking challenging water experiences.
