Rykten, the Swedish word for rumors, are unverified pieces of information that circulate informally about a person, group, event, or situation. They are often incomplete, speculative, and not officially confirmed. In sociology and communication studies, rumors arise in conditions of uncertainty and perceived relevance, when people seek to reduce ambiguity. They frequently rely on sensational or emotionally charged content and can spread rapidly through social networks before any evidence is established.

Rykten spread through multiple channels, including face-to-face conversations, messaging apps, social media, and traditional media that relay informal reports. As they travel, details are altered through leveling and sharpening, making the story easier to remember and more engaging. The speed and reach of modern technology can amplify rumors, increasing the difficulty of verification.

They cover a range of subjects, from personal reputations to workplace incidents and political events. Distinctions exist with gossip (private matters), urban legends (longer stories), misinformation (false information spread unintentionally), and disinformation (false information spread knowingly).

Rykten can have mixed effects. They may reflect genuine concerns and prompt official clarification, but they can also cause reputational harm, mislead decisions, and provoke panic or discrimination.
