Ryggsvømming, often translated as backstroke, is a swimming stroke performed on the back. It is one of the four main competitive swimming strokes, alongside freestyle, breaststroke, and butterfly. In ryggsvømming, the swimmer lies on their back with their body close to the surface of the water. The arms move in a reciprocal windmill-like motion, alternately extending forward and pulling through the water. The legs perform a flutter kick, similar to freestyle but inverted. The head remains relatively still, allowing the body to maintain a streamlined position.

Ryggsvømming offers several benefits, including providing a good workout for the upper body and core muscles. It is also a less strenuous option for some swimmers compared to other strokes, as it allows for continuous breathing without the need to turn the head. In competitive swimming, ryggsvømming events are swum over various distances, and the stroke requires significant coordination and strength. The start of a ryggsvømming race involves pushing off the wall while in a backfloat position. The turn at the end of the lane involves rotating the body towards the wall and pushing off in a streamlined backfloat.
