Rozsdásodási refers to the process of oxidation that affects iron and its alloys, such as steel. It is a common form of corrosion that occurs when iron is exposed to oxygen and moisture. The chemical reaction involves iron atoms losing electrons and forming iron oxides, which are commonly known as rust. This reddish-brown, flaky substance is weaker than the original metal and can compromise the structural integrity of iron-based materials.

The rate of rozsdásodási is influenced by several factors. The presence of electrolytes, like salt, significantly accelerates the process by increasing the conductivity of water, which facilitates the electrochemical reactions. Higher temperatures also tend to speed up the rate of corrosion. Impurities in the metal itself can create localized areas with different electrochemical potentials, leading to preferential rusting. Atmospheric conditions, such as humidity and the presence of pollutants like sulfur dioxide, also play a crucial role.

Preventing rozsdásodási involves several strategies. Protective coatings, such as paint, oil, or plastic, create a barrier between the iron and the corrosive environment. Galvanization, the process of coating steel with a layer of zinc, provides sacrificial protection; the zinc corrodes preferentially, sacrificing itself to protect the underlying steel. Alloying iron with other elements, like chromium and nickel, to create stainless steel, drastically improves its resistance to corrosion due to the formation of a passive chromium oxide layer. Electrochemical methods, such as cathodic protection, can also be employed to prevent or slow down the rusting process in specific applications.
