Preferential is an adjective describing the act or state of giving preference to one thing over others, or of relating to preferences rather than absolutist rules. It derives from the Latin praeferre, meaning to carry before or to prefer.

In policy and law, the term is used to describe practices that confer advantages on particular groups, goods, or channels, sometimes explicitly, sometimes as a transitional or temporary measure. Preferential treatment may occur in immigration, employment, procurement, and taxation, where certain individuals or entities receive favorable consideration, exemptions, or easier access. In international trade, it is closely associated with preferential tariffs or preferential trade agreements, which reduce tariffs for selected partner countries relative to others. Such arrangements are often designed to promote development, regional integration, or strategic relationships, but they can raise debates about equity, competition, and distortions from unconditional rules such as Most Favored Nation status.

Preferential voting, or ranked-choice voting, is a method in which voters rank candidates by preference rather than choosing a single option. If no candidate achieves a majority on first preferences, ballots are redistributed according to voters' ranks, a process used in several democracies, most notably Australia. In other disciplines, preferential attachment describes a network growth process where nodes with more connections tend to attract more links, a principle observed in social, biological, and information networks. Critics of preferential policies argue they can entrench inequality or create incentive distortions; proponents say they improve outcomes by aligning decisions with expressed preferences or developmental goals.
