A rotational laser, also known as a laser level or rotary laser, is a surveying and construction tool that projects a continuous 360-degree laser beam. This beam acts as a level reference line, allowing for precise measurements of height and alignment over a large area. The core component is a laser diode that emits a beam, which is then directed through a rotating prism or mirror. This rotation creates the horizontal plane of light. Some models also offer vertical leveling capabilities and can project beams at an angle, known as a grade.

Rotational lasers are commonly used in various construction applications, including setting foundations, installing drywall, pouring concrete, grading land, and landscaping. They are particularly useful for tasks requiring a consistent level across long distances or in large open spaces where traditional spirit levels would be impractical. The laser beam is typically visible to the naked eye in dim light conditions, but for brighter environments or longer distances, a laser receiver or detector is often used. This receiver attaches to a leveling rod and beeps or displays a reading when it is aligned with the laser beam, allowing operators to accurately mark heights.

The accuracy and range of a rotational laser depend on its model and quality. They are powered by batteries, either rechargeable or disposable, and are often housed in robust, weather-resistant casings to withstand demanding job site conditions. The setup involves placing the laser on a tripod and allowing it to self-level or manually adjusting it to a level position. Once leveled, the laser begins its rotation, projecting the horizontal reference plane.
