Rolcoating is a coating technology in which a liquid coating is transferred from a roller to a substrate to form a continuous film. In practice, rolcoating is commonly used synonymously with roll coating, particularly in continuous, web-based manufacturing. It is widely used in roll-to-roll processing for flexible films, papers, textiles, and wood products.

Process and variables: A reservoir holds coating liquid; a metering roller sets the film thickness, and an applicator or transfer roller delivers the coating to the substrate, with the nip and relative speeds controlling the wet film thickness. Drying or curing follows, using air ovens, infrared, or UV/EB equipment. Material types include varnishes and paints, barrier or functional coatings, adhesives, and conductive or dielectric layers. Coatings may be water- or solvent-based, UV-curable, or heat-curable. Substrates include paper, foil, polymer films, textiles, and wood.

Equipment variants and configurations: Forward-roll, reverse-roll, knife-over-roll, and other metering arrangements exist to tailor thickness and surface finish. Rolcoating enables high-speed, continuous production with relatively uniform thickness, suitable for thin films from a few micrometers upward.

Advantages and challenges: The method offers thickness control, scalability, and compatibility with various chemistries, but challenges include air entrainment at the nip, edge beads, coating defects, solvent emissions, and sensitivity to substrate surface energy and roughness.

Applications: Packaging coatings for papers and films, protective and decorative finishes for wood, textile coatings, and emerging roll-to-roll processes for electronics and photovoltaics.
