Risteyksillä is a Finnish term that refers to locations where two or more roads meet, creating points where different road users must negotiate conflicting movements. The concept is central to road safety and traffic management, as intersections are common sites for accidents and congestion.

Intersections can be categorized by how they are controlled. Uncontrolled intersections have no traffic signals or mandatory signs, relying on basic right-of-way rules. Controlled intersections use devices such as traffic lights, stop signs, or yield signs to regulate movements. In recent decades, many places have also adopted roundabouts (kiertoliittymät) to reduce speeds and improve safety and efficiency by simplifying decision making for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Pedestrian safety is a key design and regulatory focus at intersections. Marked pedestrian crossings, often called crosswalks or suojatiet in Finnish, give pedestrians priority in many situations, and drivers are generally required to yield to pedestrians entering or crossing a crosswalk. Separate facilities for cyclists, such as dedicated bike lanes and signals, further reflect the mixed-use nature of risteyksillä.

Design considerations at intersections include sight distance, lane arrangement, signaling, lighting, and clear signage. Effective intersection design aims to minimize conflict points, accommodate all road users, and maintain smooth traffic flow while reducing the risk of collisions.

In Finnish traffic regulations, the general rule is that drivers must yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and obey traffic signals. Intersections thus represent critical junctions where adherence to rules, correct behavior, and proper infrastructure determine safety and efficiency for everyone using the roads.
