Rigging ropes are lengths of rope designed to support, hoist, or control loads in systems where predictable strength and reliability are required. They are used in marine rigging, stage and theatre rigging, construction, and other applications that involve suspending equipment or guiding moving loads. Selection emphasizes load capacity, flexibility, abrasion resistance, and compatibility with hardware such as blocks, shackles, thimbles, and slings.

Materials and constructions vary. Natural fibers such as manila were common historically, but modern rigging favors synthetic fibers. Polyester rope provides high strength, low stretch, and good UV resistance; nylon offers excellent shock absorption and toughness; polypropylene is lightweight and inexpensive but less durable in sun exposure; ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE, e.g., Dyneema) offers high strength with low weight and very low stretch. Rope constructions include laid (three-strand), braided, and kernmantle (a core inside a protective sheath).

Rope selection is shaped by working load limit, breaking strength, elongation under load, resistance to abrasion and environmental factors, and the operating temperature. In practice, users follow manufacturer ratings and applicable safety standards. Knots, hitches, and lashings—such as bowline, clove hitch, figure-eight, and lashings—must be chosen with respect to the rope type and the load direction. Ropes are used with hardware rated for rigging loads and protected from sharp edges.

Care and inspection are essential. Routinely examine for fraying, core damage, glazing, or chemical and UV degradation. Replace damaged rope promptly. Clean and dry after use, store away from heat and direct sunlight, and avoid prolonged exposure to chemicals that can weaken fibers. Regular maintenance helps prevent unexpected failure in service.
