A rheologist is a scientist or engineer who studies rheology, the science of how matter deforms and flows under applied forces. Rheology encompasses rate- and time-dependent responses of liquids, suspensions, gels, and soft solids, and links macroscopic flow behavior to a material's microstructure and intermolecular interactions. Materials can be Newtonian, with constant viscosity, or non-Newtonian, exhibiting shear-thinning, shear-thickening, thixotropy, or viscoelastic effects.

Rheologists employ specialized instruments called rheometers to quantify properties such as viscosity, elastic storage modulus, and viscous loss modulus. Common geometries include cone-and-plate, parallel-plate, and concentric-cylinder (Couette) configurations. They perform tests such as steady shear, oscillatory frequency sweeps, creep and stress-relaxation experiments, and temperature sweeps. Advanced methods include extensional rheology and micro-rheology using particle tracking.

Applications span polymer processing, food science, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, cement and geophysics, and biophysics. By characterizing how a material flows or yields under processing conditions, rheologists help design formulations, optimize manufacturing, and predict performance under service conditions.

Education and career typically involve chemical or mechanical engineering, physics, or materials science, with graduate work in rheology or rheometry. Rheologists work in universities, research institutes, and industry laboratories, collaborating with product developers and process engineers. The field also relies on constitutive models—mathematical relations that relate stress and strain, such as Newtonian, Bingham, Herschel-Bulkley, and viscoelastic models—to describe observed behavior and guide material design.
