Reverberatory refers to a type of heating arrangement in which heat from combustion is reflected off a roof or hood onto the material being treated, rather than being delivered primarily by direct contact with flame. In metallurgy and materials processing, a reverberatory furnace uses radiant heat from a heated roof to warm the charge, producing a more uniform heat distribution and reducing direct flame contact with the material.

A reverberatory furnace typically consists of a brick or refractory-lined chamber with a broad, shallow hearth and an overhead hood or roof. The flame and hot combustion gases are directed toward the roof, and the heat is then radiated downward onto the charge. The design confines the process gases to a separate passage, often with a flue system that carries products such as sulfur dioxide away from the charge. This arrangement allows heating of the charge in a relatively still atmosphere and can accommodate large, flat beds of material.

Common applications include roasting sulfide ores (to convert metal sulfides to oxides and to liberate sulfur dioxide) and calcination of carbonate or hydrated materials (to remove volatile components and drive off moisture). Historically, reverberatory furnaces were widely used in copper, lead, and zinc operations, as well as in lime and other calcination processes. They have also been employed for ore roasting and various oxidizing operations where controlled, uniform heat is advantageous.

Advantages of reverberatory design include improved heat distribution and reduced contamination from direct flame contact. Limitations involve slower heat transfer rates compared with direct-fired furnaces, greater thermal losses, and larger furnace footprints. While many modern facilities have shifted to alternative heating technologies, reverberatory concepts remain relevant for certain legacy operations and specialty roasting and calcination tasks.
