Retrolental is a term used in ophthalmology to describe the area behind the lens of the eye. While often used in a general sense, it gained significant clinical importance with the recognition of retrolental fibroplasia, a serious condition affecting premature infants.

Retrolental fibroplasia, now more commonly known as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), is a potentially blinding eye disorder that occurs in premature babies. In ROP, abnormal blood vessels grow in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. This abnormal growth can lead to scarring, detachment of the retina, and ultimately vision loss if left untreated.

The development of ROP is strongly linked to the immature vascular system of premature infants. Exposure to high levels of oxygen, often necessary for survival in the neonatal intensive care unit, can trigger this abnormal blood vessel growth. However, it's a complex condition with multiple contributing factors, and not all premature infants exposed to oxygen develop ROP.

Diagnosis of ROP involves a specialized eye examination by an ophthalmologist, typically performed when the infant is a few weeks old. Treatment options depend on the severity of the ROP and may include laser therapy or cryotherapy to stop the abnormal blood vessel growth. Early detection and intervention are crucial for preserving vision. The understanding and management of ROP have evolved significantly, leading to improved outcomes for affected infants.
