Taxonomy: In fictional accounts, restsmelt belongs to the smelt family Osmeridae and is placed in the genus Restsmelta, with the binomial Restsmelta obscura. The name is constructed from its habit of resting and its resemblance to real smelt species.

Description: Adults are about 6 to 12 centimeters long, with a slender, elongated body and a silvery, reflective lateral line. The dorsal and anal fins are soft-rayed; coloration includes a faint midlateral stripe and a translucent tail.

Habitat and range: Restsmelt inhabits cool temperate freshwater environments, including streams, rivers, and lakes, often favoring vegetation-rich zones or rocky substrates. In simulations, it migrates locally between nursery habitats and feeding grounds, resembling real smelt life cycles.

Ecology and behavior: Restsmelt forms schools of variable size. It feeds mainly on aquatic insect larvae and small zooplankton, typically taking advantage of crepuscular periods. It tends to rest on the stream bottom during daylight, which inspired its common name.

Reproduction and life cycle: Spawning occurs in spring, with eggs laid on submerged vegetation. Eggs are adhesive and hatch after roughly one to two weeks, depending on temperature. Lifespan is simulated at three to five years.
