A resonating chamber, or Helmholtz resonator, is a type of acoustic resonator. It consists of a cavity with a neck or opening. The air within the cavity and the air mass in the neck act as a mass-spring system. When sound waves of a specific frequency, known as the resonant frequency, strike the opening, the air in the neck vibrates. This vibration causes the air in the cavity to compress and expand, creating a restoring force. The system oscillates at its natural frequency, effectively amplifying sound at that particular frequency.

The resonant frequency of a Helmholtz resonator is determined by the volume of the cavity and the dimensions of the neck, specifically its length and cross-sectional area. A larger cavity volume generally leads to a lower resonant frequency, while a longer or narrower neck also lowers the resonant frequency. Conversely, a smaller cavity or a shorter, wider neck raises the resonant frequency.

Helmholtz resonators have various applications in acoustics and engineering. They are commonly used in musical instruments, such as the body of a guitar or the soundbox of a violin, to amplify and shape the sound produced. In noise control, they can be designed to absorb specific problematic frequencies, reducing unwanted noise pollution. They are also employed in automotive exhaust systems to tune the sound and reduce engine noise. The principle can also be observed in everyday objects, like blowing across the top of a bottle to produce a tone.
