Resonanssitomografia, commonly known as MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), is a medical imaging technique used to visualize internal structures of the body. It utilizes strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed cross-sectional images. Unlike X-rays, MRI does not involve ionizing radiation.

The process begins with the patient lying on a table that slides into a large, tube-shaped magnet. This powerful magnetic field aligns the protons within the body's water molecules. Radiofrequency pulses are then applied, which temporarily knock these protons out of alignment. As the protons realign themselves with the magnetic field, they emit radio signals that are detected by the MRI scanner. Different tissues emit different signals, allowing the scanner to differentiate between them and create detailed images.

MRI is particularly useful for imaging soft tissues, such as the brain, muscles, ligaments, and internal organs. It is frequently used to diagnose a wide range of conditions, including tumors, injuries, neurological disorders, and cardiovascular diseases. The procedure is generally painless, though some patients may experience claustrophobia due to the confined space of the scanner. For certain examinations, a contrast agent may be injected to enhance the visibility of specific structures. The resulting images provide valuable information for diagnosis and treatment planning.
