Resonaation is a term encountered in some informal or non-technical writing to refer to the resonance phenomenon in a physical system. In standard scientific usage, the word resonance is preferred, and resonaation is not widely recognized as a separate concept. When resonaation is used, it generally denotes the amplification of oscillations that occurs when a system is driven at or near its natural frequency.

In physics and engineering, a system has a natural or resonant frequency at which its response to an external force is maximized. If the driving frequency matches the natural frequency, energy transfer is efficient and the oscillation amplitude can grow, though it is limited by damping and other constraints. The resulting behavior is often depicted by a resonance curve that shows peak response at the resonant frequency and a width determined by the system’s quality factor.

Resonance appears across many domains. In mechanics, a swinging pendulum or a vibrating beam can exhibit large oscillations at a specific frequency. In acoustics, instruments produce strong sounds when their components resonate. In electrical engineering, LC circuits and antennas display impedance peaks at resonance, enabling selective filtering and frequency selection. Resonance can be beneficial, as in musical tones or tuned circuits, or harmful, as in structural failures when vibrations become excessive.

Management of resonaation-like effects typically involves damping, detuning, or adding mass and stiffness to shift or widen the resonance.
