Rensebrønde, often translated as "cleaning wells" or "cesspools," are traditional wastewater collection and storage structures found in some older housing areas. Historically, before the widespread implementation of modern sewage systems, rensebrønde served as a primary method for managing domestic wastewater, including human waste, greywater, and sometimes stormwater. These structures were typically constructed from stone, brick, or concrete and were designed to hold wastewater for a period before it needed to be emptied.

The design of a rensebrønde varied, but they generally consisted of an underground pit or tank. In some cases, they were built with permeable bases to allow for some liquid to seep into the surrounding soil, a process known as leaching. However, this practice could lead to groundwater contamination. In other designs, rensebrønde were sealed to prevent any leakage.

Maintenance of rensebrønde involved periodic emptying by specialized vacuum trucks, which would remove the accumulated waste. This waste was then typically transported to designated treatment facilities or landfill sites.
