A remskive, commonly referred to in English as a belt pulley, is a wheel designed to guide and transmit power to a belt drive system. The belt runs in a groove or on the rim of the pulley, allowing rotational motion to be transferred from a driving shaft to a driven shaft. Pulleys are used to change speed and torque, align rotating shafts, and provide a simple, maintenance-friendly means of power transmission.

Pulleys come in several configurations. Grooved pulleys are designed for V-belts or multi-groove belts, while timing pulleys (synchronous pulleys) fit timing or toothed belts for precise torque and speed control. Flat pulleys are used with flat belts. In many applications, pulleys are arranged as fixed, step, or variable-pitch types. Step pulleys have multiple diameters on a single hub to produce discrete speed changes, whereas variable-pitch or adjustable pulleys allow continuous adjustment of the belt ratio.

Construction and mounting are standard considerations. Most remskiver assemblies consist of a wheel with a central bore, a hub, and one or more grooves or rims for belt engagement. They are commonly made from cast iron, steel, or aluminum. A keyway or set screws may secure the pulley to a shaft, and some designs use taper-lock bushings or other mounting methods. Bearings may be integrated into the pulley hub in compact units.

Materials, fit, and alignment influence performance and belt life. Proper belt tension, correct belt type for the pulley profile, and precise shaft alignment reduce wear and slip.
