Rektalpalpation, also known as digital rectal examination (DRE), is a medical procedure in which a healthcare professional inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum to examine the surrounding tissues. This examination is commonly performed during routine physicals, particularly for men over the age of 40, as part of prostate cancer screening. It can also be used to assess the health of the prostate gland, rectum, and surrounding structures, as well as to detect abnormalities such as tumors, inflammation, or signs of infection.

The procedure is typically conducted in a clinical setting, with the patient positioned in a bent-knee, lying-on-their-side (sim’s position) or kneeling-over-the-examination-table stance. The examiner wears a disposable glove and applies a water-based lubricant to the finger before insertion. The patient may experience mild discomfort or pressure, but the procedure itself is usually brief, lasting only a few seconds to a minute.

Rektalpalpation is a straightforward and non-invasive diagnostic tool that helps clinicians identify potential health issues early. While it is not a definitive diagnostic test for conditions like prostate cancer, it can provide valuable information when combined with other diagnostic methods, such as blood tests, imaging, or biopsies.
