Rekonstrukcija is a term used in several South Slavic languages to denote the act or process of reconstructing something that has been damaged, destroyed, or missing parts. It derives from Latin re-, “again,” and constructio, “a putting together,” and is cognate with the English word reconstruction.

In construction and architecture, rekonstrukcija refers to rebuilding a structure after damage, decay, or demolition, as well as the broader rehabilitation of a site or urban area. It can involve structural repairs, modernization, or complete replacement, and is often part of planning, financing, and regulatory processes. It is distinct from restoration, which aims to return a building to a known historical state, whereas rekonstrukcija may alter or upgrade the original design.

In medicine, rekonstrukcija is used for reconstructive surgery to restore form and function after injury, cancer treatment, or congenital defects. Procedures include breast reconstruction after mastectomy, facial reconstruction after trauma, and tissue grafts or implants. In archaeology and science, rekonstrukcija refers to reconstructing past structures or organisms from incomplete evidence, such as rebuilding a building’s plan from ruins or modeling a dinosaur from fossils. This often involves comparative analysis, interdisciplinary methods, and careful documentation of uncertainties.

In information technology and digital media, the term can describe the reconstruction of data, images, or 3D scenes from partial or corrupted sources, using algorithms and modeling.
