Reimplantasjon refers to the surgical reattachment of a body part that has been completely severed from the body. This typically occurs due to traumatic accidents such as severe cuts or amputations. The goal of reimplantation is to restore function and appearance to the affected limb or digit.

The success of reimplantation depends on several factors, including the severity of the injury, the length of time the part has been detached, the patient's overall health, and the surgeon's skill. For a successful outcome, the severed part must be preserved correctly, usually by keeping it cool and clean.

The surgical procedure itself involves meticulously rejoining bones, muscles, tendons, nerves, and blood vessels. This is a complex process that requires microsurgical techniques, especially when dealing with smaller structures like nerves and blood vessels. Post-operative care is crucial and often includes physical therapy to aid in the recovery of movement and sensation.
