Regulatorsystem, or regulator system, is a broad designation for an arrangement that maintains a process variable at a desired value by continuously measuring the output and applying corrective action. The concept is central to regulation in engineering as well as in natural and social systems, where feedback mechanisms stabilize behavior against disturbances.

A typical regulator system comprises a sensor to measure the process variable, a controller to compute a corrective signal, an actuator or drive to influence the process, and the plant or process being regulated. A reference input defines the target value, and a feedback path returns the measured output for comparison.

Operation in a closed-loop regulation minimizes the error between the reference and the actual output. The controller design aims to achieve accuracy, stability, and robustness in the face of disturbances and model nonlinearity. The control signal is applied to the plant to drive the process toward the target state, with the feedback path enabling continuous adjustment.

Common implementations include proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers, state-space controllers such as linear quadratic regulators (LQR), and model predictive controllers (MPC). Digital controllers enable complex strategies and adaptation, while analog controllers offer speed and simplicity. Regulatorsystems can be centralized or distributed, depending on the scale and structure of the process being controlled.

Applications span manufacturing automation, process control, energy systems, automotive and aerospace, and consumer electronics. The term is used broadly to describe systems that stabilize or regulate complex processes through feedback, and may also appear in discussions of regulatory policy, though in technical contexts it is most closely associated with feedback control.
