Regulatioon is commonly a misspelling or variant of regulation. When used as a term, it generally refers to the system of rules, standards, and enforcement mechanisms that govern behavior in a society or economy.

Regulation aims to protect public health and safety, promote fair markets, protect the environment, and provide information and predictability for institutions and individuals. It operates through laws enacted by legislative bodies and implemented by executive agencies, often with delegated authority to create binding rules. Regulatory processes typically include rulemaking, licensing, inspections, monitoring, reporting requirements, and sanctions or penalties for noncompliance.

Types of regulation can be broadly categorized as economic and social regulation. Economic regulation seeks to influence market outcomes through control of prices, entry or exit, and competition, while social regulation focuses on nonprice dimensions such as safety, health, privacy, and environmental impact. Sectors commonly regulated include financial services, energy, telecommunications, transportation, food and drug safety, and housing or land use. Some industries also engage in self-regulation or co-regulation through professional standards and industry bodies, sometimes with government oversight.

Regulation has both benefits and costs. It can reduce information asymmetry, prevent harm, and align private incentives with public welfare, but it can also impose compliance costs, constrain innovation, and lead to regulatory capture where industry interests influence rules. Global differences in regulatory philosophy and enforcement create a diverse landscape of approaches to the same underlying goals.
