Regulativ is a term used across disciplines to denote mechanisms, ideas, or structures that regulate, govern, or guide processes or behavior. In its base form, regulativ derives from Latin regulativus meaning pertaining to regulation, and has been adapted into several European languages to describe normative constraints or control processes. The concept is characteristically abstract rather than a single concrete entity; it emphasizes how systems maintain order, adapt to change, or constrain outcomes.

In philosophy, regulative ideas or principles are used to organize inquiry without constituting objects of knowledge themselves. For example, Kant distinguished regulative ideas as guiding concepts that help explain the unity and coherence of experience but do not have empirical reality.

In natural and social sciences, regulativ mechanisms or frameworks describe how systems maintain homeostasis, coordinate development, or govern social behavior. This includes gene and metabolic regulation in biology, feedback and control loops in systems theory, and regulatory regimes in economics and law.

In practice, regulativ aspects are assessed for their effectiveness, scope, and limits. Debates often focus on whether a regulation is too prescriptive or too loose, and how regulations interact with innovation, autonomy, and enforcement.
