Regreasing is the process of replenishing or replacing grease in mechanical components to maintain lubrication, reduce friction and wear, and protect against corrosion. It is a routine maintenance activity used across many sectors, including automotive, industrial machinery, bicycles, marine equipment, and tools.

Typical targets for regreasing include bearings, joints, couplings, chains, and sliding surfaces. Methods range from manual application with a grease gun or brush to centralized or automatic lubrication systems that deliver measured amounts of grease at preset intervals. Selection of grease depends on base oil viscosity, thickener type (soap, complex soap, or inorganic), NLGI consistency grade, temperature limits, and compatibility with seals and existing lubricants.

Frequency of regreasing is determined by operating conditions such as load, speed, temperature, contamination exposure, and duty cycle. Manufacturer recommendations and condition-based monitoring (vibration analysis, temperature checks, visual inspection) inform schedules. Best practices include cleaning or purging old or contaminated grease before application, using the correct grease type and quantity, avoiding overfilling, and ensuring seals and fittings are in good condition.

Risks of improper regreasing include contamination, accelerated wear, grease breakdown, seal damage, and environmental release. Safe handling and disposal of used grease are important to minimize environmental impact and comply with regulations.
