regelkring, or control loop, is a closed-loop regulation system used to maintain a process variable at a desired value. It consists of a sensor that measures the variable, a reference value or setpoint, a controller that computes a control signal from the difference between measurement and setpoint, and an actuator that influences the process. The process itself, often called the plant, is the part being controlled. The loop continuously repeats, allowing disturbances or changes in the process to be counteracted.

Operation unfolds as follows: the sensor provides a measurement to the controller, the setpoint is subtracted to form the error, the controller outputs a signal, and the actuator applies this signal to the plant. The resulting change in the process variable is fed back to the sensor, forming a dynamic feedback loop. Negative feedback is typically used to reduce error and stabilize the system; positive feedback can lead to instability or hysteresis if not carefully managed.

Controller types range from simple on-off and proportional control to more sophisticated methods such as integral, derivative, or combinations like the PID controller. Tuning methods aim to achieve desired performance in terms of speed, stability, and steady-state accuracy. Design considerations include stability margins, transient response, sensitivity to noise and delays, and actuator saturation, with stability analysis employing techniques such as Nyquist, Bode plots, or root locus.
