Refinage is the process of purification or improvement of a substance to reach higher quality or purity by removing unwanted constituents. It is applied across industries to enhance performance, value, and compliance with specifications. The term is often used in French-language technical literature as a broad concept, though specific domains may prefer refined terms such as raffinage for certain sectors.

In metallurgy, refinage refers to producing high-purity metals from impure sources. This may involve roasting or smelting to remove gangue, followed by refining steps such as fire refining or electrolytic refining. Electrorefining uses electrochemical cells to deposit pure metal on the cathode while impurities accumulate at the anode or electrolyte.
