Reduktiopainatus is a relief printmaking technique, known in English as reduction printing, in which a single printing block is used to produce a multicolor image through sequential inking and carving. The method relies on progressively removing areas from the block after each color is printed, so that later colors cannot be applied to those areas. The result is a tightly integrated composition where the colors and shapes are built up on the same substrate.

Process and practice: The artist transfers a design to a block made of wood or linoleum. The block is inked with the first color and printed onto paper. After the print dries, the artist carves away the areas that will receive subsequent colors. The block is then inked with the next color and printed again, aligning it with the earlier print. This sequence continues until the final color is printed. Because portions of the block are removed and cannot be restored, registration must be precise, and mistakes can be irreversible. Editions are typically limited, and each print may bear slight variation due to timing, inking, and registration.

Materials and variations: Common materials include woodblocks or linoleum blocks, oil- or water-based inks, and printing paper, with a baren or printing press used to transfer ink.
