Receivetransmit refers to the capability of a device to both receive and transmit signals, typically in radio and telecommunications equipment. The term is commonly abbreviated RX/TX or TX/RX and is central to transceivers, which combine transmitter and receiver functionality in a single unit or shared channel. The design challenge is to manage switching between receive and transmit modes while protecting sensitive receiver circuitry from high transmitter power.

Operation modes: In half-duplex systems, the same channel and often the same antenna are used for both transmission and reception, but not simultaneously. A control mechanism switches between modes, as in walkie-talkies. In full-duplex systems, separate transmit and receive paths operate simultaneously, usually using duplexers or isolation devices to prevent transmitter leakage into the receiver and to allow independent data streams, as in most mobile phones and fiber links.

Technologies and components: Transmit/receive switching is achieved with devices such as PIN diode switches, ferrite or ferrite-loaded circulators, and RF relays. Duplexers and circulators provide isolation between TX and RX on shared antennas. Modern systems frequently use solid-state switches and digital control to automate mode changes, particularly in software-defined radios.
