Rebellions are organized challenges to the authority of a government, ruling group, or occupying power, typically carried out by groups within a state or by communities facing perceived injustice. They aim to alter specific policies or conditions rather than to achieve broad, lasting political transformation. The terms rebellion, uprising, insurrection, and revolt are often used interchangeably, but scholars distinguish them by factors such as scope, organization, and duration.

Causes commonly include political repression, economic distress, social inequality, ethnic or religious tensions, and perceived illegitimacy of rulers. Actors can range from peasants and workers to students, militia groups, or regional or ethnic minorities. Rebellions may be sparked by external upheavals, wars, or crises, and can be influenced by opportunistic alliances or external support.

Tactics vary widely and may include protests, strikes, civil disobedience, nonviolent resistance, attacks on symbols of power, or outright armed uprisings and guerrilla actions. Rebellions are often met with state force, but can also prompt concessions such as reforms, decentralization, or amnesty, particularly if they gain broad support or threaten the stability of the ruling order.

Outcomes are diverse. Some rebellions are quickly suppressed; others lead to reforms, autonomy, or regime change, and some escalate into prolonged conflicts or humanitarian crises. Repression can also provoke cycles of retaliation or drive rebels to seek external support or migration.

Historically, rebellions have occurred across cultures and eras, from peasant uprisings and regional revolts to anti-colonial insurrections. Their study focuses on motives, organization, external influences, and the political context to understand their causes and consequences.
