Ratsastus, the Finnish term for horseback riding, is the sport and activity of riding horses. It involves balance, coordination, and communication between rider and horse, and it is pursued for recreation, sport, and transportation. The field includes a range of disciplines, from classical dressage and show jumping to eventing, endurance riding, and various western riding styles. In competition, riders seek harmony with their horses, precise timing of aids, and accurate execution of sequences.

Riders use a saddle, bridle, and girth, along with a saddle pad and protective stirrups. A helmet is essential for safety, and many riders wear boots, gloves, and appropriate riding apparel. Horses require regular grooming, hoof care, and veterinary attention, plus appropriate tack fitting.

Training and technique rely on a balanced seat, soft hands, controlled leg aids, and clear communication with the horse. Progressive training builds fitness, suppleness, and confidence in both horse and rider, with emphasis on welfare, correct tack, and humane handling.

Organizations and competition: Nationally, the sport is organized in Finland by Suomen Ratsastajain Liitto (SRL), a member federation of the international FEI. Local clubs host lessons and events, ranging from introductory rides to national championships.
