Rajaporttikytkentä, also known as a boundary scan or JTAG (Joint Test Action Group) interface, is a standardized digital interface that allows for testing, debugging, and in-system programming of integrated circuits. It is primarily used in the manufacturing and testing of electronic devices, especially printed circuit boards (PCBs). The core concept of rajaporttikytkentä is to provide a serial communication path to access internal circuitry of a chip that would otherwise be inaccessible.

The rajaporttikytkentä standard defines a set of specific pins on a chip, typically including TDI (Test Data In), TDO (Test Data Out), TCK (Test Clock), TMS (Test Mode Select), and TRST (Test Reset). These pins are connected to a dedicated chain of boundary scan cells within the chip. Each boundary scan cell is associated with an input or output pin of the chip. By shifting data serially through this chain using TCK and controlling the mode of operation with TMS, test patterns can be applied to input pins, and the resulting output can be observed on TDO.

This serial access mechanism enables several key functionalities. Firstly, it facilitates in-circuit testing (ICT) of components and interconnects on a PCB, allowing for the detection of manufacturing defects like shorts, opens, and incorrect component placement without needing physical probes on every pin. Secondly, rajaporttikytkentä is crucial for debugging hardware designs during development, providing visibility into internal chip states and enabling the control of signals. Lastly, it is widely used for in-system programming (ISP) of flash memory and other programmable devices directly on the assembled PCB.
