Raillorigin is a concept in railway analytics referring to the reference origin point for a rail network’s geospatial coordinate system. It provides a fixed anchor from which all track segments, distances, and node coordinates are measured, enabling consistent spatial analysis and data integration across datasets.

Etymology and scope: The term combines "rail" and "origin." In practice the railorigin can be chosen to minimize projection distortion or to align with survey benchmarks; common choices include a major interchange, a national grid origin, or a central point on the network. The exact position is project-specific and does not imply any physical feature on the ground beyond serving as a coordinate reference.

Methodology: Railorigin is defined in the network’s GIS or CAD model. Coordinates of each vertex along the track are expressed as offsets in meters (or feet) from the origin, typically using a projected coordinate system such as UTM or a local engineering grid. Transformations between coordinate systems require known railorigin references to preserve spatial relationships.
