Radiofrekvenssiablaatio, often abbreviated as RFA, is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to treat a variety of conditions by destroying abnormal tissue. The technique utilizes radio frequency energy, a form of electromagnetic radiation, to heat and ablate (destroy) targeted cells. A specialized probe, called an electrode, is inserted into the body, usually guided by imaging techniques such as ultrasound or fluoroscopy, to reach the area requiring treatment. Once in position, the electrode delivers controlled radio frequency current. This current generates heat within the targeted tissue, causing cellular damage and necrosis. The body then gradually reabsorbs the destroyed tissue.

RFA is commonly employed in pain management, particularly for chronic back pain caused by facet joint arthritis. In this application, the radio frequency current is used to lesion the small nerves that transmit pain signals from the facet joints to the brain. It is also used in cardiology to treat cardiac arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation, by ablating small areas of heart tissue that are causing irregular electrical signals. Other applications include treating certain tumors, uterine fibroids, and varicose veins. The procedure is generally well-tolerated, with recovery times typically being shorter than traditional surgery. Potential risks are minimal but can include pain, bruising, infection, or damage to surrounding tissues, depending on the treated area.
