The concept is applied to a range of spoken and semi-spoken contexts, including casual conversations, livestreams, podcasts, chat conversations, and unedited interviews. In research, raakapuhe is analyzed for its surface features—such as interruptions, overlaps, hesitations, slang, code-switching, and regional or social markers—as well as for how speakers establish stance, identity, and solidarity in informal settings. It often includes nonstandard grammar, slang, and sometimes taboo or provocative language.

Linguists emphasize that raakapuhe reflects social meaning as much as linguistic form.
