Röstresonansen, often translated as vocal resonance, refers to the amplification and modification of sound produced by the vocal folds as it travels through the vocal tract. This complex process is crucial for producing the rich and varied sounds of human speech and singing. The vocal tract, consisting of the pharynx, oral cavity, and nasal cavity, acts as a resonator, selectively amplifying certain frequencies and dampening others. These amplified frequencies are known as formants, and their precise positioning and interaction determine the unique quality and identity of each vowel sound.

The size and shape of the vocal tract, which can be altered by the movements of the tongue, jaw, lips, and soft palate, directly influence the formants and thus the resulting sound. For instance, constricting the oral cavity with the tongue pushed forward will create different formants than widening it with the jaw dropped. Similarly, opening or closing the velopharyngeal port, which separates the oral and nasal cavities, directs airflow and sound into the nasal cavity, leading to nasal resonance and the production of nasal consonants like 'm' and 'n'.
