Réveil is a French word that translates to "awakening" or "wake-up" in English. It commonly refers to a device used to wake someone from sleep, essentially an alarm clock. These devices have evolved significantly over time, from early mechanical bells to modern electronic versions with a variety of features.

The primary function of a réveil is to emit a sound at a pre-set time. Historically, this sound was often a loud ringing produced by hammers striking bells. As technology advanced, so did the nature of the réveil. Electric alarms became widespread, offering different tones and volumes. Digital displays replaced analog faces, allowing for more precise time setting and additional functions.

Modern réveils often incorporate features beyond simple timekeeping and alarm functions. Many include snooze buttons, allowing users to delay the alarm for a short period. Some offer multiple alarm settings, different sound options (including nature sounds or music), and even gradual wake-up light simulations. The portability and integration with other devices have also changed the landscape, with many people now using their smartphones as their primary réveil. The concept of a réveil, however, remains fundamentally the same: to signal the start of a new day or a specific time.
