Questing is the practice of pursuing defined tasks or journeys that lead to a specific objective. In games and interactive media, it typically involves an assignment or problem presented by an in-game character or system, with the player earning rewards upon completion. Outside games, the term is used more loosely to describe any purposeful journey or goal-seeking activity.

Origins and use: The concept emerges from tabletop role-playing and medieval storytelling, but the term “quest” gained prominence in computer and video games starting in the 1980s and 1990s. In most games, quests are tracked in a quest log, outlining objectives, progress, and rewards, guiding players through narrative or gameplay sequences.

Common quest types: Main quests advance the central plot; side quests expand the world and offer optional challenges; fetch or collection quests require gathering items; kill or defeat quests require combat; escort or protect quests involve protecting characters or locations; puzzle quests require solving riddles or mechanisms. Quests can be linear or open-ended, dynamic (changing based on choices), or procedurally generated.

Design and reception: Well-designed questing balances challenge and reward, minimizes excessive repetition, and offers meaningful choices and consequences. It supports pacing, world-building, and player agency but can feel tedious if focused on repetitive collection tasks without payoff.
