Quasicognitive is a neologism used in discussions of cognitive science and artificial intelligence to describe processes or systems that resemble cognitive functions but do not constitute full cognition. It is not a standardized term with a single definition, and its usage varies by author.

The term derives from quasi-, meaning “almost” or “resembling,” paired with cognitive. In some accounts, quasicognitive phenomena involve perception, memory, learning, planning, and decision-making implemented through non-conscious, approximate, or heuristic mechanisms, rather than through fully explicit, deliberative reasoning.

In practice, quasicognitive systems may display adaptive behavior and problem solving that appear cognitive, yet rely on statistical models, rule-based heuristics, or embodied interaction rather than symbolic manipulation.

The term is often contrasted with fully cognitive architectures and with generic “intelligent” or “smart” behavior; it is also discussed in debates about the boundaries between computation and cognition and about the limits of current AI. Because there is no universally accepted definition, some scholars view “quasicognitive” as a useful heuristic label rather than a formal category.
