While most of this radiation is absorbed by the atmosphere, powerful flares can cause radio blackouts, disrupting communication systems. The charged particles, known as solar energetic particles, can travel more slowly, taking anywhere from minutes to hours to reach Earth. These particles can pose a radiation hazard to astronauts and satellites, and can also damage electronic components.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are often associated with solar flares, although they are distinct phenomena. CMEs are massive expulsions of plasma and magnetic field from the Sun's corona. If a CME is directed towards Earth, it can cause geomagnetic storms, which can further disrupt power grids, satellite operations, and communication. Studying solar flares helps scientists understand the Sun's behavior and its impact on space weather.
