Päikeseplekkidega refers to solar flares, which are sudden, intense bursts of energy from the Sun's surface. These events occur when magnetic energy that has built up in the Sun's atmosphere is suddenly released. Solar flares are often associated with sunspots, which are temporary phenomena on the Sun's photosphere that appear as darker spots than surrounding areas.

The energy released during a solar flare can take many forms, including electromagnetic radiation across the entire spectrum, from radio waves to X-rays and gamma rays, as well as charged particles. The intensity of a solar flare is classified based on its X-ray brightness. There are five classes: A, B, C, M, and X, with X-class being the most powerful. Each class is ten times more powerful than the previous one.

When a solar flare erupts, it can have several effects on Earth. The electromagnetic radiation can reach Earth in about eight minutes. While most of this radiation is absorbed by the atmosphere, powerful flares can cause radio blackouts, disrupting communication systems. The charged particles, known as solar energetic particles, can travel more slowly, taking anywhere from minutes to hours to reach Earth. These particles can pose a radiation hazard to astronauts and satellites, and can also damage electronic components.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are often associated with solar flares, although they are distinct phenomena. CMEs are massive expulsions of plasma and magnetic field from the Sun's corona. If a CME is directed towards Earth, it can cause geomagnetic storms, which can further disrupt power grids, satellite operations, and communication. Studying solar flares helps scientists understand the Sun's behavior and its impact on space weather.
