There are two main types of solar tracking systems: single-axis and dual-axis. Single-axis trackers rotate along one axis, typically east-west, following the sun’s apparent movement across the sky. Dual-axis trackers adjust along both the horizontal and vertical planes, providing more precise alignment with the sun’s position. While dual-axis systems offer higher efficiency gains, they are more complex and costly to install and maintain.

Solar tracking systems are particularly beneficial in regions with high solar irradiance, as they can increase energy production by 20% to 35% compared to fixed installations. However, the additional energy gain must be weighed against the higher initial cost, mechanical wear, and potential maintenance requirements. Trackers are commonly used in large-scale solar farms but are less common in residential applications due to space constraints and expense.

The implementation of solar tracking technology has evolved alongside advancements in automation and renewable energy systems. Modern trackers often incorporate sensors and algorithms to optimize positioning based on real-time solar data, improving overall performance.
