Pubar is a clinical term used to describe the onset of pubic hair development during puberty, often referred to as pubarche. The term is derived from the Latin roots associated with hair growth in the pubic region and is commonly used in pediatric endocrinology and adolescent medicine. It is distinct from other pubertal milestones such as thelarche (breast development in girls) and menarche (first menstrual period).

Pubarche typically marks the activation of adrenal androgens (adrenarche) and usually occurs as part of the broader pubertal process. Its timing varies widely among individuals and populations, commonly aligning with early to mid-teen years in many cases, but development can begin earlier or later. The appearance of pubic hair is assessed using Tanner staging, with stage II involving the first sparse, pigmented hair at the base of the penis in boys or along the labia in girls, progressing to fuller patterns in subsequent stages.

Clinical significance includes its use as a milestone in assessing pubertal timing. Delayed pubarche may indicate another delay in puberty or underlying endocrine issues, while precocious pubarche (early appearance of pubic hair) can be associated with conditions such as precocious adrenarche or congenital adrenal hyperplasia in some cases. However, isolated early pubic hair development does not always indicate pathology and is evaluated in the broader context of overall growth, development, and hormone levels.
