Protokolvalg is a term used in Danish- and Norwegian-language political and organizational contexts to denote a formal voting process related to protocol matters within a deliberative body or organization. The word combines protokol (protocol) and valg (election or vote). In practice, protokolvalg can refer to votes on procedural questions, the adoption of official minutes of a meeting (the protocol), the composition of a protocol committee, or decisions about rules of procedure governing future meetings. The exact scope and rules vary by jurisdiction and organization, but it generally concerns issues that are administrative rather than substantive policy decisions.

Procedures typically occur at the start of a session or when a matter requiring a protocol decision arises. Motions are proposed, debated, and then put to vote. Voting can be by open show of hands, voice vote, roll call, or, where stipulated, a secret ballot. The outcome is recorded in the minutes, and the result may require a simple majority, an absolute majority, or a two-thirds majority depending on the body’s standing orders.
