Proteintofat is a term used in nutrition science to describe the portion of dietary protein that ends up stored as adipose tissue when energy intake exceeds energy expenditure. It refers to the tendency of excess protein to contribute to fat mass rather than being completely used for tissue protein synthesis.

Mechanism: Most dietary protein is used for protein synthesis and metabolic maintenance. When intake greatly exceeds requirements and total calories surpass expenditure, a fraction of amino acid carbon skeletons can be converted via gluconeogenesis or lipogenesis. Deamination releases ammonia and carbon skeletons that can enter acetyl-CoA and fatty acid synthesis pathways, particularly under high insulin levels. The efficiency of protein-to-fat conversion is relatively low compared with carbohydrate- or fat-to-fat pathways, and nitrogen disposal via the urea cycle limits excess storage.

Measurement and context: There is no standardized method to quantify proteintofat in individuals. Estimates, when discussed, are highly context dependent, varying with energy balance, dietary composition, protein quality, body composition, and hormonal state. In typical mixed diets with moderate caloric balance, the contribution of proteintofat is small; it becomes more relevant in high-protein, energy-dense regimens or when protein displaces fats and carbohydrates in the diet.

Applications and limitations: The concept is mainly theoretical and used in metabolic modeling and diet planning discussions. Critics argue that proteintofat oversimplifies metabolism because protein is rapidly turned over for various uses, and fat storage from protein is not a primary pathway except under particular conditions. More robust metrics focus on total energy balance and macronutrient distribution rather than a protein-to-fat conversion ratio.
