Prosessoriydintä, often translated as processor core, refers to the fundamental processing unit within a modern central processing unit (CPU). In essence, a CPU can contain one or more such cores, each capable of executing program instructions independently. Historically, CPUs had a single core. However, the evolution of microprocessors led to the development of multi-core processors, where multiple cores are integrated onto a single chip.

The presence of multiple cores allows a processor to handle multiple tasks or threads of execution concurrently. This parallel processing capability significantly enhances the overall performance of a computer, especially for demanding applications like video editing, gaming, and complex scientific simulations. Each core typically includes its own arithmetic logic unit (ALU), control unit, and cache memory, enabling it to function as a standalone processor.

The number of cores in a processor is a key specification that influences its performance and price. Consumer-grade processors commonly feature between two and sixteen cores, while high-end server processors can contain dozens or even hundreds of cores. The architecture and speed of each core, as well as how efficiently they can communicate with each other and the rest of the system, also play crucial roles in determining a processor's capabilities. Software designed to take advantage of multi-core processors can distribute its workload across available cores, leading to faster execution times.
