Propagulum is a term used in theoretical ecology to designate a reproductive or dispersal unit that is self-contained and capable of initiating a new organism under suitable conditions. It is conceptually related to a propagule but is defined to emphasize autonomy, energy stores, and protective coatings that permit survival during transport and dormancy prior to germination.

Definition and composition: A propagulum comprises genetic material sufficient to establish growth, a minimum reserve of nutrients, and a protective envelope that resists desiccation, UV exposure, or mechanical damage. Formation and dispersal: Propagula may form through fragmentation, budding, or specialized developmental programs. They detach from the parent and disperse via wind, water, animals, or other vectors. Dormancy can be triggered by environmental cues, allowing survival across unfavorable periods.
