Production layout, or plant layout, is the arrangement of facilities within a manufacturing site to optimize the flow of materials, people, and information. A well-designed layout aims to minimize handling and travel, reduce bottlenecks, and improve safety and flexibility, while supporting the required production rates and quality levels.

Common layouts include product layout (assembly line), where equipment and workstations are arranged in sequence to match a fixed routing; process layout (functional layout), where similar machines or processes are grouped by function; cellular layout, which arranges machines into cells that produce a complete family of parts; and fixed-position layout, where the product remains stationary and workers and equipment move to it. Hybrid layouts combine elements of these approaches.

Key objectives are to balance workloads, minimize cycle time, shorten lead times, reduce inventory and delays, use space efficiently, ensure safe ergonomics, and enable easy maintenance and quality control. The choice depends on product variety, demand stability, capital availability, and flexibility requirements.

Design considerations include product design and routing, production volume and mix, equipment types and capacity, space constraints, material handling systems, safety and regulatory factors, and maintenance needs. Methods used include line balancing, time and motion studies, capacity analysis, production-flow simulations, and layout planning software.

Impacts of layout decisions include throughput, inventory levels, worker productivity, and overall equipment effectiveness. A lean environment often favors product layouts for high-volume, low-variance production, while process layouts suit customized or batch production. Re-layouts or modular layouts are common as product mixes evolve.

The term is widely used in manufacturing management, industrial engineering, and operations research, and is supported by standards and software for modeling, optimization, and digital twins.
