Procesplanner, often translated as process planner, is a role or software function in manufacturing that is responsible for defining how a product is manufactured. A procesplanner creates and documents the process plan, detailing the sequence of manufacturing steps, required operations, tooling, fixtures, and equipment. The aim is to ensure the product can be produced efficiently, at the required quality, and within the available resources and lead times.

Key responsibilities include analyzing product designs and drawings, selecting appropriate manufacturing methods (such as milling, turning, casting, forming, or additive processes), and developing routing and work instructions. The procesplanner determines machine and workstation assignments, selects tools and fixtures, specifies process parameters, and estimates setup and operating times. They also coordinate material requirements, quality checks, inspection plans, and any required change control or deviations from standard procedures. Cost, capacity, and lead-time considerations are routinely evaluated to optimize manufacturability and cost.

In practice, procesplanners work within broader systems such as ERP, MRP, MES, and CAD/CAM environments. They may use computer-aided process planning (CAPP) tools to assist in generating and modifying plans. The role is common in industries with complex fabrication and assembly, such as automotive, aerospace, and electronics, but varies with company size and structure. A procesplanner is often complemented by manufacturing engineers and production planners, and their work culminates in a formal process plan or routing used to execute production orders.
