The earliest technique, the letterpress, dates to the 15th century and involves stamping inked movable type onto paper. Lithography, invented in the late 18th century, uses the immiscibility of oil and water to create images on a flat stone or metal plate. Energy consumption is decreasing with LED and laser technologies. In many countries, regulations now require printed products to meet recyclability standards.
